Here are four affordable Toronto neighbourhoods with good schools.
When it comes to finding homes that are affordable, your best approach is to look for the up-and-coming neighbourhoods. We’re here to provide you with the best Toronto schools (Fraser Institute Rating of 7+) in and around these four up-and-coming neighbourhoods:
- Gerrard Street East
- East Danforth
- Bloordale Village
- Dupont Street
Advice Regarding School Enrolment in Toronto
One thing to keep in mind is that depending on where you buy your home in Toronto, there will be a designated school for your address. Should you prefer to send your child to a school that resides outside of that designated area, you can apply for optional attendance should that school have space available.

As per the TDSB website, their attendance status is updated every December for the following school year. To ensure your desired school has open enrolment, you can refer to the list at the bottom of the TDSB website to see the current availability status for Toronto elementary schools.
GERRARD STREET EAST
Gerrard Street East is inheriting the desirability of Leslieville and the Danforth. You can still find homes in this part of Toronto’s east end that won’t break the bank. While there are half a dozen elementary schools in and around Gerrard Street East, here are the schools with a rating of 7+.
PAPE AVENUE JUNIOR PUBLIC SCHOOL
Grades JK – 6 School Rating: 8/10
This Toronto school has a fairly small limited designation so you may need to apply for Optional Attendance but it stretches both north and south of Gerrard Street East roughly between Logan and Pape Avenue.
WITHROW AVENUE JUNIOR PUBLIC SCHOOL
Grades JK – 6 School Rating: 9/10
This top-ranked Toronto school resides in Riverdale, just north west of the Gerrard Street East stretch.

EAST DANFORTH
Recently ranked number four by Toronto Life’s neighbourhood guide is the Danforth. East along the subway line there’s plenty of choice for homes within your budget. EARL HAIG PUBLIC SCHOOL
Grades JK – 8 School Rating: 8/10
Located just south of the Danforth on Coxwell, this school is a popular choice for families living in East Danforth.
ST. BRIGID CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Grades JK – 8 School Rating: 7.8/10

DUPONT STREET
Recently included in Urban Toronto’s recent Growth to Watch for 2019 Report is Dupont Street. Just west of the highly regarded Annex neighbourhood and north of the subway line, there are some major developments in the works for this area that will positively impact housing prices. However, when it comes to schools, you may need to look just outside your school zone to send your kids to a good quality school.
ST. MARY OF THE ANGELS CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Grades JK – 8 School Rating: 8.1/10
The best rated schools in the Wallace-Emerson/Dupont Street area are part of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. There are a few great schools slightly south of Dupont that are in the Bloordale Village neighbourhood that you could apply for optional attendance.

BLOORDALE VILLAGE
Bloordale Village and Dupont Street are kind of one in the same when it comes to buying a home. There are some of the best rated schools in and around this area.
ST. SEBASTIAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Grades JK – 8 School Rating: 10/10 Scoring high is St. Sebastian with a 10/10 Fraser Institute Ranking.
DEWSON STREET JUNIOR PUBLIC SCHOOL
Grades JK – 6 School Rating: 8/10
Dewson Street Junior Public School is a bit southeast of Bloordale Village but is one of the better schools in the area. Refer to the option attendance page on the TDSB website to see if there will be open enrolment.
INDIAN ROAD CRESCENT SCHOOL
Grades JK – 6 School Rating: 7.3/10
In the opposite direction just northwest of Bloordale Village is Indian Road Crescent School. Residing in the Junction neighbourhood, which was also referred to in the Urban Toronto Growth to Watch for Report, you may also consider looking for homes in this area north of Bloor.
